Eyes Front

"It is said in The Origin of the Races of Man that

""The Prekovar is a person without true sense, for he cannot conceive of himself separate from the collective of his race, and therefore has no personality."

"It is personality, combined with intelligence, that produces the truly dangerous man. That is because it is personality that makes a man unpredictable, added to a racial character that makes a man strong. And that is why the Prekovar has always failed in his contest with the Sen. First at Pritluky, it was revealed to us that the essential character of the Sen - to press upwards against all, even his own - could only triumph against the lonely prejudice of the Prekovar, that only his own race's competition with other races mattered."

Lieutenant Rewnsure remembered his training. It was not entirely like that, he thought, and yet, he could see, that it could be seen exactly like that.

"A pound of bread, please," he asked in perfect Prekovar. This southern woman could not stand his northern accent, but she fulfilled his request. The northerners were powerful and they were dangerous, she reminded herself, as she wrapped the loaf in grease-proof paper.

The streets of Pritluky were full of men and machines. Lieutenant Rewnsure was just one of them, huddled in the same old charcoal coat, as he walked among them all.

Komárek's grandfather was born in a village outside Ostrava. His grandfather was a farmer, whose wife bore him twenty children. His grandfather was a Prekovar man.

Komárek's father was born in a village outside Ostrava. His father was a farmer, whose wife bore him twenty children. His father was a Prekovar man.

But Komárek was born in Ostrava. He joined the Ministry for State Security when he was only twenty. He took a wife, and had only seven children. He left the farm.

Komárek knew his grandfather would disapprove, but he knew that his grandfather was not sharp enough to understand. His grandfather was a good Prekvovar man, but he could not see the sacrifice that men like Komárek needed to make to defend the farms, and the wives, and the children.

The Praetannics did not have farms, or wives, or children. The Praetannics wanted to destroy the farms, and the wives, and the children. And it was up to men like Komárek to stop them.

Another day, Lieutenant Rewnsure clocked in at the Pritluky naval yard.

There was nothing for it, really, but to go as the Prekovy did, for there was no war, and nothing of interest at stake, and so he had only to preserve his identity as a Prekovy. He was an outsider, but then he was from the north, and this was the south. It was not unexpected.

"A day at work is a day lost, my friend," a colleague taunted him, in a southern dialect he could barely understand. He nodded and smiled, returning a northern salute.

"Another day!" He affected a simplicity which his work belied. His superiors had already noticed him. "Wenceslas! He works like twenty men!"

They did not work like twenty men. That was part of why they hated him. Why had this northerner turned up to show them they were no good? He should go back where he came from.

Many of the superiors were northerners. They took note of his accent and his manner.

"Our navy is the greatest!" he replied, smiling blankly. He didn't know what these southerners had said to him. It did not matter. Prekovy's navy was the greatest.
